Casa Orquídeas is a strikingly landscaped private tropical garden on the gulf shore. All the surrounding lodges offer trips here for guided tours of the lovely botanical gardens. Tropical Costa Rica’s tropical fruit is both delicious and different from what you may get on your supermarket shelves, and the ornamental plants, thought of as house plants in the US, grow huge here. This is the beginning of Parque Las Esquinas/Piedras Blancas, Costa Rica’s newest national park. The Austrian Government bought a large portion of the rainforest around here and donated it to the Costa Rican Park service. Another gift to visitors is the Esquinas Rainforest Lodge (pool, full board), a model in sustainable development where students from the University of Vienna do biological research. It features enchanting rooms with shady verandas, plus a clear-stream swimming pool nearby. Guided adventure tours available. About US $ 85 per person, meals included. Profits benefit local communities. In the US,888/504-2190 for information (no reservations). From the Inter-American Highway, turn at Villa Briceño (Km 37) and head up the dirt road for four km/2.5 miles. Free airport pickup in Golfito.
